LIDAR is the terminology used in the survey business for what people call a “Laser scanning survey”. Lidar is always in 3D and can be conducted at ground level, below ground or aerially.
3D Laser Scanning Surveys
Essentially Lidar is a Laser spun millions of times to saturate an area with the beams from a laser that are captured on their return path to reflect a position – millions and million of positions that then form surface models of whatever reflected the laser. Through analysis and processing, surveyors then produce products such as a digital terrain model, surface model, contours and such like.
Lidar surveys are often undertaken with imagery as well to enhance the end result product.
